In a lecture or meeting, it’s not just your writing skills that are in need for development. It is absolutely vital and essential to have good listening skills. Here are some strategies on how to keep your ear concentrated on the important points.
Determine the “big picture” of what is being discussed. Often times we hear many individual segments that all lead up to a single point or the “big picture”.
Keep your posture upright to allow blood to flow properly and breathe deeply. Keep an eye out for the presenter’s body language to really take note of what is important in their speech. You will also be able to tell when the speaker is going to start a new topic and can prepare beforehand on your notes for the new influx of information.
Keep your ears alert for cues. You may often hear speakers say, “The important thing here is that..” or “This point is crucial..” or “It is important to note..”, etc.
Your notes are not essays on which you need to pass. Keep it brief so you can have time to concentrate during the lecture or meeting. Your notes will not make sense if you have no understanding of what’s going on in front of you.
